Naval Bases
Taiwan has major naval facilities at Kenting, Suao, Keelung and Makung (Pescadores). The RoCN is headquartered at Tsoying. The Marine Corps is under the Fleet Command at Tsoying. Naval aviation is both shore- and ship-based, with helicopters operating from destroyers. The primary land-based naval air base is located at Tsoying. The navy has other bases at Anping, Hsinchu, Hualien, Tamshui, and Wu Chi [Wuchi]. Another base is being built at Taitung.
In 2002 it was reported that the Navy had proposed to build a base to accommodate the eight planned diesel-powered submarines inside a mountain along the eastern coast. The base, the most ambitious civil engineering project to be undertaken by the navy in decades, would be named Chingshan.
